What would happen if an unpaid carer had an emergency that stopped them from providing care?

Salford's carers emergency scheme has been updated and made simpler. It enables carers to plan how the person they care for will be supported if the carer has an emergency.

If you have an emergency which stops you being able to care, you can plan how the person you care should be supported. The plan gathers details of the person you care for and gives you the opportunity to name up to two individuals for us to contact in case of an emergency.

Examples of emergencies might be:

• You have an accident or sudden illness and are admitted to hospital.

• Family emergency such as a close relative being taken ill and requiring help/ attention.

• Real risk to your employment on a particular unforeseen occasion

You will be issued with a card which you can keep in your wallet or purse. In an emergency you, or someone with you, can call the telephone number on the card. The telephone number will connect you to the Care on Call service.

They can use the unique reference number on the card to identify you and put your plan into action. They will call the named contacts in your plan and request them to provide the support needed in your absence.

If all of your named contacts are unavailable, Care on Call will attend to assess the level of support needed and contact the duty social work team. Unfortunately, Care on Call staff are unable to provide any personal care tasks. We hope that you will never have the need to use this card but that making a plan will give you the peace of mind that the person you care for will receive the support they need in the event of an emergency.
