Enter and view: Beenstock Home

Healthwatch Salford carried out an Enter and View visit to Beenstock Home, a residential care home with places for up to 26 residents.

Summary of report

The home was evaluated against eight quality indicators: strong, visible management; staff with the time and skills to do their jobs; good knowledge of each individual resident and how their needs may be changing; a varied programme of activities; quality, choice and flexibility around food and mealtimes; ensuring residents can regularly see health professionals such as GPs, dentists, opticians or chiropodists; accommodating residents’ personal, cultural and lifestyle needs; and being an open environment where feedback is actively sought and used.

Findings

The Enter and View representatives found that Beenstock Home was a well-managed care setting that was set up to meet the needs of the older Orthodox Jewish community. Improvements had been implemented swiftly following on from a Care Quality Commission inspection in 2016 and the home had recently been re-inspected to be rated as ‘Good’. Of particular note were the wide variety of activities available to the residents and the homely appeal. The staff seemed well supported by the management to work together to make sure that the cultural and practical needs of the residents were met, and positive feedback was received from residents, visitors and staff.

Recommendations

Based on these findings, Healthwatch Salford made four recommendations on: accessibility standards and fire evacuation policies; staffing levels; and updated training and information for staff, including about implementing the Accessible Information Standard. The report includes a response from the service provider.
